Services provided by social workers in BC are recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency for the purposes of the Medical Expense Tax Credit. Registered Social Workers are classified as medical practitioners under the federal Income Tax Act for the purposes of claiming medical expenses on income tax returns, in addition to provincial credits.

Some extended health care plans provide coverage for Registered Social Workers. Services provided to you or on behalf of an eligible direct family member can likely be billed under your coverage if you have a plan. Or contact your health insurance provider and request that Registered Social Workers be added to your plan.

Social work is recognized as a health profession by Revenue Canada and services from Registered Social Workers are exempt from GST.
